Electric Rocket Engine System R&D

چکیده

1. Pulsed Plasma Thruster Pulsed plasma thrusters (PPTs) are expected to be used as a thruster for a small satellite. The PPT has some features superior to other kinds of electric propulsion. It has no sealing part, simple structure and high reliability, which are benefits of using a solid propellant, mainly Teflon (poly-tetrafluoroethylene: PTFE). However, performances of PPTs are generally low compared with other electric thrusters. At Osaka Institute of Technology, the PPT has been studied in order to understand physical phenomena and improve thrust performances with both experiments and numerical simulations. We mainly studied electrothermal-acceleration-type PPTs, which generally had higher thrust-to-power ratios (impulse bit per unit initial energy stored in capacitors) and higher thrust efficiencies than electromagnetic-acceleration-type PPTs. Although the electrothermal PPT has lower specific impulse than the electromagnetic PPT, the low specific impulse is not a significant problem as long as the PPT uses solid propellant, because there is no tank nor valve for liquid or gas which would be a large weight proportion of a thruster system. This article mainly presents studies on the recent R&D of the electrothermal PPT onboard PROITERES satellite.

Reduction of emissions and fuel consumption of diesel engine by using common rail fuel injection and aftertreatment systems

In this experimental study, the fuel system of the OM364 diesel engine manufactured by IDEM company, which operates in the basic mode with inline fuel pump and mechanical governor control, is upgraded to a common rail system with electronic control by the ECU. Also, emmssion of exhaust gases is reduced by SCR and DOC catalysts then performance and emmission parameters of engine are compared i...

Investigation of Different Validation Parameters of Micro Gas Turbine for Range Extender Electric Truck

Nowadays the demand for reducing pollutant emissions and fuel consumption have paved the way of developing more fuel-efficient power generation system for transportation sector. Micro gas turbine (MGT) system can be an alternative to internal combustion reciprocating engine due to its light-weight and less fuel consumption. In this paper, some major running and operating characteristics of MGT ...

AIAA 93-1096 Multidisciplinary Design Of a Rocket-Based Combined Cycle SSTO Launch Vehicle using Taguchi Methods

This paper presents the results of an effort to optimize a conceptual design of a conical (wingedcone) single-stage-to-orbit launch vehicle. The vehicle employs a rocket-based combined-cycle (RBCC) engine capable of four different operating modes ejector, ramjet, scramjet, and rocket. The RBCC engine offers higher engine thrust-to-weight ratios than competing airbreathing engine cycles while ma...

AIAA 96-2688 Options for Flight Testing Rocket-Based Combined-Cycle (RBCC) Engines

While NASA’s current next-generation launch vehicle research has largely focused on advanced allrocket single-stage-to-orbit vehicles (i.e. the X-33 and it’s RLV operational follow-on), some attention is being given to advanced propulsion concepts suitable for “next-generation-and-a-half” vehicles. Rocketbased combined-cycle (RBCC) engines combining rocket and airbreathing elements are one cand...
